The phrase "one another" is used a host of times throughout the New Testament. It shows that brothers and sisters in Christ have a mutual responsibility toward each other. Although one may find churches filled with friction, they are not serving the LORD. The Bible is very clear about the ways we are to treat one another. We're to edify one another, be kind, practice hospitality, give preference, forgive and love one another.

Summer is rapidly ending and our young people will soon be headed off to school. Sin is a real danger that faces our young people when the head back to school. They'll be surrounded by friends who don't share a common standard that guides their choices. What is the Christian to do? A Christian needs to remember who he is and live according to his faith. He needs to choose his friends carefully, but also be busy teaching those who are lost.

You may have heard the song, "There's a Great Day Coming." It reminds the listener of the coming judgment of God. For those who have lived by Faith, it's a glorious day. For those who have refused to acknowledge the LORD in their lives, this day will not only be sad, but terrifying. We'll spend time considering some of the amazing facts about Hell, so its reality may be avoided by any who have not lived by His Will in the past.

Paul reminded the Christians in Philippi to keep our minds focused on pure and lovely things. Nothing can be more lovely than thinking about the heavenly home that awaits those who follow Christ. When we consider Heaven, we think of our place of rest, being truly at home with the LORD. We think of our inheritance and the permanency of our home. When we see so many lost to the battle with Satan, Heaven reminds of the comfort and victory in Christ that awaits.

There's a battle in the lives of all men and women between the desires of the flesh and the Spirit of the LORD. This battle is most evident when an individual is overtaken by an addiction. Maybe it's an oversimplification, but Paul tells his readers, that if one is busy "walking in the Spirit'" he will not gratify the desires of the flesh (Galatians 5:16). The freeing truth is that we can overcome addictions when we admit our problem and take responsibility for our behavior. When we...

In the early years of one's spiritual life, it can be a roller coaster of hot and cold, yes and no or in and out. The Devil is good at what he does, though what he does is not good. In Hebrews 10, the writer addresses some Christians in the same state. He encouraged them not to go back to their sinful ways, remember how good conversion was and endure.

In John 7, officers were sent to arrest Jesus, but they returned to the chief priest empty handed. When asked why they didn't bring Jesus with them, they responded, "No one ever spoke like this man." There was truly something special about Jesus, our Master Teacher. He made no distinction between classes of men, nor did He hide the difficulties of discipleship behind its rewards. He didn't change His teaching to please or soothe the masses. Occasionally, he shocked people to get their...

There are a number of reasons for joy in this life, but few are more precious than that of a newborn child. It's a time to pray to the LORD with thankfulness and bringing requests for guidance. We can thank the LORD for joy that comes from such a time in life, but we also need His help to become like a child, to live as good examples, for help raising the child in the LORD. We have an inner need to be reconciled. We don't like to leave things hanging. When we're at odds with friends, we want restoration and harmony for the relationship. The same is true with God. We cannot hide our sins from God and they separate us from Him. We need to be reconciled with God and His Word provides us with clear instruction for doing so.

Throughout God's Word, we see examples of fatherhood. Each of these cause us to reflect on the kind of father we want to be our children, men like Manasseh, Eli, Joseph and Zebedee. A good father accepts his position as head of the home, sets the right example, teaches his children to respect authority, provides for and loves his family, trains his children and will take responsibility for guiding their eternal destiny.

We can fall victim to measuring success by the wrong metrics. Such would be the case if we measure responses to the gospel by the number of those baptized or those who made public repentances. In fact, people respond to the gospel every time it's preached. Some will ignore what's taught, others will act immaturely to the message, some become angry and others simply say "No." There are some, though, who make a personal, private commitment to change and finally others make a visible...

Paul Harvey was famous for talking about the back-story surrounding the headlines in the news. They events that occurred in Philippi would certainly have been headline news-worthy: a riot based on the claims of defying death; men arrested, beaten and jailed without charges; an earthquake in the city; and a prison break! When we look at the conversion of the Philippian jailer, we're impressed by "the rest of the story." He realized his lost condition and responded to his faith in...

If we acknowledge that nothing is more important than our souls, then it would benefit us to consider what might be our spiritual living will...

However, none of these records are important as whether our names are recorded in the Book of Life. God is keeping a record that has eternal consequences. Nothing is as important as that record and not everyone's name will be recorded in the Book of Life.

Simon Greenleaf, founder of Harvard Law School, stated that the credibility of witnesses depends on their honesty, ability, the consistency of their testimony, how their testimony conforms with experience and how it coincides with the circumstances. Using those criteria, we can evaluate the testimony of the disciples of Christ. Were they credible witnesses?

Memorial Day is a time set aside for us to remember the veterans who've served our country. The LORD also instructs us to remember our Creator and how we lived our lives on earth. The thief on the cross asked the LORD to remember him. We are called to remember Christ-like qualities. Most significantly though is God's declaration that our sins would NOT be remembered any longer.

King David wrote, "I was glad when they said to me, 'Let us go to the house of the LORD'." Assembling should be a true joy, privilege and honor for us as the LORD's servants, but some seem sadly burdened by "having to go to church again." We assemble because the LORD commanded it, but also to become stronger, function as a church, be a good example, make Christ our only priority and to be with Him in Heaven.

In the letter to the Hebrews, we read that the Word of God is sharper than any sword. There's militancy in the gospel of Christ, a battle between spiritual forces of good and evil. We are at war for the souls of men, but the sword of the LORD may be muffled by allowing sin, withholding truth, trusting human wisdom and forgoing opportunities to preach.

Dishonesty is a serious moral issue that touches every aspect of life. Though lying has become more common and, to an extent, condoned by society, Christians are to be different from the world. We are to be honest with ourselves and with others. There are many ways we may be guilty of dishonesty and lying today. If we are to be Christlike, we'll root out the devil in each of these ways.

John Calvin taught doctrines that gained significant popularity among Christian denominations, but are not found in God's Word. When you refute one element of his teaching, you refute the system of doctrine due to the interdependencies. We'll address the ideals of total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace and perseverance of the saints and will compare Calvin's teaching to what the Bible says on the topic.

The gospels are clear about the sinner's need to repent. Repentance is not simply sorrow and God's Word demonstrates that distinction. We see examples of the sorrow we're to have for sin in the scriptures. If we're truly sorrow, there will be distinct indications of our repentance. The LORD offers us hope and mercy. We can change and repent from our past ways, turning to the LORD.

When Peter addressed the crowd who was upset because Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath, he referenced Jesus as the stone that was rejected by them, the builders. Though Jesus was the Son of God and Savior of mankind, he was rejected. Like the Christ, if we stand for what's right, we'll be excluded and rejected by those who don't live according to his will. Being excluded is nothing new and we need to learn to hold our ground despite being rejected by those of the world.

It's a blessing to enjoy the kind of unity we've experienced for a number of years, but one would be wise to start learning about unity long before there are signs of discord. To have unity, we must act unselfishly and seek to be near to each other. We must work with one another in integrity and truth, yielding to each other as we are taught. We can only find unity in the truth of the gospel. This requires us to pray for it and spend time talking about it.

There are many reasons why we choose to sin against God. When Paul demonstrated that all are guilty of sin in his letter to the Romans, he identified a key reason for their choice, "There is no fear of God before their eyes" (Rom 3:18).  Without fear for God, there is no motivation to listen. We must fear the God through whose power the universe was created, both in reverence and terror. That fear should lead us to obedience given that we will each face God in judgment.

The Word of God is the standard by which we are called to live and should challenge us to faithful service. It's words are inspired by God, but not every word recorded was spoken by an inspired man. Nonetheless, there's much wisdom we can learn from words uttered by men like Nebuchadnezzar, the blind man whom Jesus healed, Naaman's servants, King Ahab and Gamaliel.

Jesus instructed His disciples to seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness as our first priority. Seeking first things first keeps us from sinning against God as we may say proverbially, "idle hands are the Devil's workshop." We often hear about the world's priorities, but even these must come second to the LORD whether it be family, serving others, materialism or any other temporary thing. We must recognize the value of our soul and keep our priorities in order.

There's much we can learn from Paul's attitudes toward evangelism, teaching others the gospel of Christ summarized succinctly in his three "I am" statements in his letter to the Romans (1:14-16). From Paul's perspective, he acknowledged that "I am a debtor," "I am eager/ready," and "I am not ashamed of the gospel."

At the beginning of each year, people frequently make resolutions for taking action and changing behavior in the new year. Many are familiar with the resolutions in the song, "I Am Resolved," but we must be resolved not to linger in the world, to go to the Savior, follow Jesus, enter the Kingdom, be more faithful and be the best example we can be.

We encounter King David at one of the lowest points of his life following his sin with Bathsheba and death of their child, fleeing to Philistia and the death of his son Absalom. David wrote Psalm 34 when he was in this state, but he humbled himself, admits his guilt and inquires of the LORD. We too much seek God's guidance, seek to help others and demonstrate humility before Him.

Because God's Word is the standard, it is in ALL things, those who believe in the God of the Bible will not engage in anything lacking His approval. Although the Bible has much to say about the need to be sober, there are still sincere people who question whether one can have fellowship with God and drink alcohol. There are a few specific to which people will turn and arguments that people will make that we must address to come to a common understanding of God's will on the matter: you can...

Self-control refers to a person's ability to control his emotions, desires and expressing them in our behavior. James wrote about our need to control our tongues given the damage that we can do with how we use our Words. Failing to maintain control always leads us to regret, so we must obey God and bring ourselves into submission with His Will.

Those who follow Christ are to be difference makers. Our friends should see Christ through us, like the song often sung, "Christ Liveth in Me." They should see Christ in the way I speak, act, dress, behave and serve others as He would. As a result, we should be an example to others, unashamed of Christ and teach the Good News to others, that salvation is available to all mankind. The kingdom seed was broadcasted. We need to sow and proclaim the praises of Jehovah

There's no disagreement that the birth of the Messiah was a climatic moment recorded in the gospels, but God has given us no authority to institute worship around the event. The cute, baby Jesus, born in a manger is both endearing and compelling, but the message of truth that He grew up to preach pushed people away from Him. The bigger event is not that He left the womb, but that He left the tomb, resurrected from the dead and rules at the right hand of God.

Sin gets in the way of serving the LORD and will keep us from Heaven in the end. The Devil will constantly tempt us, but why do we choose to sin against God? Ignorance is one of the reasons that men sin against God when they violate laws they didn't know about. Just because someone didn't know the speed limit doesn't mean they aren't guilty of violating it. The same is true of God's law. Ignorance is not bliss, so we need to replace ignorance with knowledge.

Pilate would typically release a prisoner during the feast he would hold. On this occasion, given the choice between Barabbas, a murderer, and Jesus, the crowd asked to have Barabbas released. Pilate then asked the question that even today hangs in our ears, "then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" and the crowd demanded His death. We too must answer this question. Will we put off a decision, refuse to believe, refuse to confess Him or refuse to obey Him. Will we allow...

Paul wrote to the church at Philippi, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Phil 4:13). It causes one to ask, "What are those things that I can do through Christ?" We can work in His kingdom, preach the Word of God without fear, serve the needs of His church and help save those who are lost in sin.

When we search the scriptures, Christian responsibilities weren't limited to the first day of the week, rather we see them working daily. Daily, christians examined the scriptures, prayed, exhorted each other, put their desires to death and cared for the church. The same should be true of us, applying ourselves to do the daily work of the LORD.

The age of the earth has been a topic of a great deal of fervent discussion. Many believe that the Earth is billions of years old. The Bible tells us about an earth that was created just thousands of years ago. There are some who attempt to get the Bible to conform to man's answer, but we need to believe God's answer.

What does it mean to say that "God is with us"? By looking into the Old Testament, we can see how God was with Moses, Joshua, Gideon, David and Jeremiah. As with them, we know that God is our help in our time of need. God's presence explains how Christians throughout time have been able to preach in foreign lands when they have no one else on whom to rely. He is our strength as we peacefully face the end of life. When God is with us, we can handle anything the world can throw at us...

Jesus taught the parable of the good Samaritan to demonstrate what it means to be a neighbor to an expert in the law. The lesson teaches us what it means to be a neighbor and do good to those around us. We must bear each others' burdens, serve other sacrificially and take action to care for others doing all that we can do, looking for opportunities to serve.

The Sermon on the Mount, was one of Jesus' first and greatest sermons. He was preparing the people to receive the gospel. As we consider that sermon, Jesus painted several contrasts for his audience. He contrasted doctrines of men and God; seeking to please man or God; demonstrating inward or outward righteousness; building up Heavenly or earthly treasures; having trust or being filled with anxiety; accepting the narrow or broad way; and choosing to be wise or foolish in obedience.

The Devil wants nothing more than to destroy us and when we fail to exercise balance, we provide him that very opportunity. As Christians, we must balance acting out of love and acting with knowledge. Taking an extreme view on either side will cause us problems. We must balance teaching to evangelize to those who do not know the gospel and teaching that is to build up Christians in the faith. We must balance collective worship with individual godly living; exhorting those who need encouragement...

When the chief priests and elders questioned Jesus regarding the authority by which He acted and taught, they couldn't have asked a more appropriate question. He was acting by the authority of God the Father and so must we. However, we need to be more specific about that. God's authority is found distinctly in His Word. Furthermore, we are under the authority of the New Testament. It is narrowed further by acting only in those areas where we have direct commands, approved examples or...

The LORD established His singular church while on this earth and each local congregation received consistent teaching. In every faithful church of the LORD's people, there are four things that must be found among them. There must be sound teaching, they must edify one another, they must be pure, avoiding sin and they must be evangelizing, spreading the gospel of Christ.

God expects us to be great thinkers. The Bible wasn't written to instruct us on exactly every step we need to follow in order to obey him. When he tells us that we need to love our spouse, He didn't tell us every specific way to demonstrate that love. The word gospel means "good news" throughout the Bible the good news was that we have salvation through the blood of Christ. The gospel is unique in that it cannot be destroyed, it's available for all mankind, it exists in dark places, it continues to result in victory and it gets better and better as your faith grows stronger.

The role of the Deacon is only mentioned a couple of times in the New Testament. The word means "servant, helper or minister" and is used in the general sense throughout the New Testament, but it is also used to refer to specific role in the LORD's church.  A rebel is one who acts against authority. Positive rebellion was depicted when the apostles refused to stop preaching the Word of God. Unfortunately, there were others in the Bible who refused to submit to anyone but themselves. Ultimately, sin is nothing more than rebellion against God. As Christians, we must have a proper respect for authority as a result of our faith in the LORD.

Suffering and adversity find their way to each of us and can make us more susceptible to sin. We see the excuses made by those in the scriptures, but more importantly, we're encouraged by the immense faith of God's people. When we consider the lives of Joseph, Job and Jesus, we know that we can confidently overcome sin. The LORD assures us a way to escape sin.

Malachi prophesied to Israel after the captivity when a remnant returned to their land, built the walls and the temple.  Though Martha welcomed Jesus into her home, it was her sister Mary who sat at Jesus' feet and heard His teaching. Mary was a close friend of Jesus and this occasion was one of the three times that we find her at our Savior's feet. Mary chose the "good part," sitting at Jesus' feet for instruction, for comfort and to serve Him. We too must hear His instruction and serve Him, allowing the LORD to comfort us during our afflictions.

The Bible contains significant evidence to support Jesus' claim to be the Son of God. Through His miracles, it demonstrated His power over diseases, demons, death, substances and nature itself. After considering these mighty works, like the centurion soldier at the foot of the cross, we too must conclude, "Truly this was the Son of God!"

When we sin, it may be due to a lack of love for God and His desires. Loving God should lead to us obeying Him. Not only should we love Him because of what He's done for us, but also because of His very nature and character. Ultimately, continuing to sin is an insult to God and we must be committed to turn away from it.

In the New Testament, we see Christians praising God, encouraging each other and teaching one another in song. The song, "I'm Not Ashamed to Own My LORD" teaches us to stand for Jesus, defend the cause of Christ, honor His Word and glorify the LORD for His sacrifice on the cross. We can have confidence that the LORD will fulfil His promises until the judgment day.

None of us were present for the crucifixion or saw the events of His arrest, but put yourself back there so you can really appreciate what took place. Judas, one of Jesus' closest disciples, one of the LORD's Apostles betrayed Him and turned Him over the lawless authority. We may have wondered, what led Judas to betray the Savior with a kiss? We can bring it closer to home though; what about those of us who claim to be His disciples today. Are there things that misled Judas also able to mislead...

Jesus' life on earth serves as an example to us event today. He gave His disciples an example, called them to come to Him, walk in Him and deny themselves. Unlike Jesus, we have not lived perfect lives on this earth. Each of us has wronged our fellow man and has likely been wrong by someone. God's Word teaches us how to handle these circumstances and establishes our personal responsibility when our brother has sinned against us. In the best of scenarios, we are to go to him, tell him his fault in private and forgive him. Thankfully, the Bible also instructs us what to do when he fails to acknowledge his sin.

When the Rich Young Ruler approached Jesus, he was overwhelmed by the degree of selflessness that Jesus demanded, but Jesus assured him, "What is impossible with men is possible with God." This fact is evidenced by God's creation, the destruction of Jericho, and in the lives of God's people like David, Jonah and Mary. With God, we too can love our enemies, obey our parents, do the right thing and be Holy.

The New Testament demonstrates a clear pattern for the work of the local church in evangelism, edification and benevolence. Jesus taught that there would always be those in need and that individual Christians should benevolently give of their blessings. However, the apostles taught that the benevolence of the church should be limited to saints in need in order to maintain its focus on those things of greater, spiritual importance.

We have the hope of Heaven and salvation only by the amazing grace of God. The grace of God is all sufficient, but there are some things that God's grace does not. Grace does not allow us to bypass Jesus Christ, ignore the gospel or bypass living by faith. Grace does not rule out the need for baptism, does not give us license to sin or offer unconditional security for the unfaithful.

As we attempt to learn more about what causes us to sin, we must consider our love for our fellow man. When we sin against others, we're demonstrate a lack of love for our fellow man. If we truly love others, we'll seek what's best for them. Considering what we deserved from God and the grace that He showed us, we should be willing to sacrifice for others, treat them equally and work to save them. With this as our focus, it will hinder us from sinning against others.

As a society, we enjoy the convenience of paying at the pump, instantly streaming music and videos and even getting immediate answers from our smart phones.  If we're not careful, overwhelming conveniences can lead to impatience, which Satan uses to tempt us today. The Word of God shows us that impatience and immediate gratification can lead to sin and was used to tempt Jesus and Moses. We can overcome the sin of impatience by learning and exercising patience.

Meditation is a great source of joy and strength and is part of our transformation to become like Christ.

As Paul taught the church in Colossae, we're to act by the LORD's authority in our lives and in our service to the LORD (Colossians 3:17). Many well meaning, religious people are part of denominations teaching contradictions. This may be professing full faith in God's Word, but supplementing it with human creeds; teaching baptism, but not for the purpose God revealed; stressing the importance of the church, but that none are essential; or wearing the name of Christ along side a man-made label....

As Christians, we should be of one mind as Paul wrote to the church in Philippi, "complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind" (Philippians 2:2). To come to agreement, we have to speak with knowledge of the Bible, rightly dividing the Word of Truth. There is unity in the scriptures and may it be the standard by which we settle religious differences.

We can be strongly influenced to follow the crowd and what they are doing. Although many young people face the temptations of peer pressure, it affects every person. The Bible talks about these influences for evil and we see examples of those who fell to the temptations. Like Joshua, we must choose to follow the LORD despite influences to the contrary and we may need to give up associations that attempt to pull us away from the LORD.
